Social


i am entirely aware that belonging to this many social networks may seem ludicrous to you. (pst, between the two of us, i’m actually a member of probably double this amount.)

so then why do i belong to all these networks? 1. it’s fun. 2. to have a legitimate opinion on a topic generally requires you to have experience in said topic.

so here i am.

teddy roosevelt once said, “…It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena..”

ok, that quote may be a little too epic for this conversation.. really, i am fascinated with social networking and social media and how it has, and still is, transforming the way we all communicate and share our lives with each other. i am even more fascinated at the way businesses are starting to realize the power of social networking, and more specifically social media, and its ability to distribute their content to the internet connected masses. many have leveraged social networking/media’s power in tracking the direct user interaction and feedback about their products and services.

because of this, i want to make sure i am up-to-date with the latest trends and changes in the social networking and internet space and the only way to do that properly is to actually be an active member of these networks.

so, again, here i am.

you can make harsh generalizations, criticize social networking, and call it a waste of time and a sign that society is moving away from physical interaction, but the fact is, that is simply not true. social media is more than just myspace and facebook and the negative things you’ve heard on the news. on a personal level, social networks, by their very definition, open you up to a vast array of people.. people that share your same interests and values. they contain people that you may have never run into on the street but that you are now connected with via the internet. the power is that you can take that connection TO face-to-face life and/or you can share ideas with people all over the globe.

to me, that is just cool!

(i’m somewhat sickened by my repetitive use of the word ‘social networking’ and how this was originally supposed to be a 2 second funny blurb about why i’m part of 14 social networking sites.)
